Black painting
Oil Painting on Canvas
190x320cm
2017
This artwork interrogates the role of symbolism in the medium of painting while concurrently emphasizing the physical 'objecthood' of the canvas. Employing stencils, the motif of scissors is repeatedly inscribed, creating a composition that at first appears uniformly black. However, this initial monochromatic perception is disrupted upon closer inspection and movement around the piece, revealing an array of scissor figures embedded within the dark tableau. This visual interplay exemplifies the dynamic interaction between observer and painting. Complementing the canvas, the stencils used in its creation, alongside a diminutive canvas intricately cut into scissor silhouettes, are exhibited. This arrangement probes the layered symbolism of scissors: as a depicted icon, as an instrumental tool in the artistic process, and as a literal form crafted by the scissors themselves.
