Research on Reading after Reading
Hand-made paper, book (422 pages)
921 228cm
2019

This work investigates the relationship between the psychological mechanisms of reading and the individual’s experience. On each page of the book, superfluous words have been erased, leaving only sentences or words that incite an empathic relationship with the reader. In this way, a new book is formed.

The deconstructed book acts as the main protagonist of the work. The author of the book has a relationship with the first iteration of the work, while in the process of its contact with the reader, a second relationship occurs, which sees the reader as the author or perhaps the second author. I use the spiritual entity of the text to explore the individual’s experience of the psychological mechanism of reading. The text after the reconstruction reflects the second author’s reception, selection and transformation of the information constructed by the first author. The work interrogates the relationship between authors and readers of contemporary art and responds to Perce’s thinking of the role of experience and self-awareness in interpretation.

This is a long-term research project that aims to explore multiple aspects of individual psychology, consciousness, cognition, experience and other topics. The research begins with my own experiences, and as it develops, it will include the responses of people from different cultural backgrounds and social roles to the same text. With a broader research base covering different types of people, there will be a wider exploration of people’s cognition.
